“Bastianini may seem under-the-radar, but he’s definitely in contention…”

Enea Bastianini has silenced doubts about his future with an exceptional start to the season. Securing fifth place in the Qatar Grand Prix, followed by a remarkable second place in Portugal and a solid third place in America, he has even outshone his teammate Francesco Bagnaia in the first three rounds.

As a Factory Ducati rider, Bastianini currently sits second in the MotoGP standings, trailing leader Jorge Martin by 21 points.

Michael Laverty, analyzing on TNT Sports after the Americas MotoGP, praised Bastianini’s performance, noting his ability to move forward consistently and manage his tires effectively. Laverty highlighted Bastianini’s fearless aggression, particularly evident in his overtaking of teammate Bagnaia in the final laps.

Bastianini’s resurgence in the factory Ducati colors has caught the attention of many, as there’s intense competition for his seat next year.

“Bastianini may have flown under the radar, but he’s definitely in the mix.

“Martin finishing fourth is a boost for [Bastianini’s] championship hopes.

“It’s a long season ahead with plenty of contenders.

“We’re not narrowing it down yet. There are still five or six in the mix.”

Bastianini secured the second-highest number of Grand Prix victories in 2022, trailing champion Bagnaia, while riding for Gresini.

Although he edged out Pramac’s Martin for the factory ride, Bastianini’s 2023 campaign was hampered by injury.

Conversely, Martin kept the title race alive until the final round and has expressed his desire to inherit Bastianini’s bike next year.

Now, Bastianini, fully recovered from a serious shoulder injury, is asserting himself as a championship contender this season.

“He’s pleased with his shoulder,” Laverty remarked.

“This circuit is particularly demanding on the shoulders. He’s addressed that issue, and he’s found the right setup with his bike.

“The feeling with the front end is back. The GP24 suits his style, providing consistency.

“Sitting in second place in the championship, his confidence is growing.

“This podium comes at the perfect moment as we return to Europe.”
