Andrea Iannone describes his first WorldSBK podium at Phillip Island as a moment “I’ll always remember.”

Andrea Iannone emerged as one of the standout performers at the season opener in Australia, securing P3 in his debut race. Following a successful two-day WorldSBK test in Barcelona last week, the prospects of repeating this achievement this weekend seem promising.

Iannone wrapped up the test in fourth position, trailing behind Nicolo Bulega who set an unofficial lap record, Toprak Razgatlioglu, and Danilo Petrucci.

Catalunya emphasizes the importance of tyre wear and top speed, both areas where Ducati has demonstrated strength in past seasons.

Given his familiarity with the circuit from his MotoGP experience, Iannone should be a strong contender for more podium finishes.

Iannone’s return to racing has been remarkably impressive, seamlessly adapting to the Panigale V4 R since his debut aboard it in Jerez last year.

Reflecting on his initial impressions, Iannone told WorldSBK.com, “During the test in Jerez last October, I felt immediately comfortable with the bike. We ended the first test in fifth place with a decent lap time.

“The bike’s feel was positive right from the start. However, I believe I still need more time on the track. There’s much work to be done.

“We’re gradually gaining a better understanding, particularly with the bike and the tyres. Speaking of tyres, everything has changed as they are quite different from MotoGP tyres.”

“I believe we had a productive pre-season, and having the support of Ducati has been crucial,” Iannone mentioned.

Reflecting on his unexpected performance at the season opener, Iannone expressed genuine surprise, acknowledging that it made his comeback feel truly ‘special’.

“I honestly didn’t anticipate this result,” Iannone began. “Achieving a podium is an incredible feat.

“This comeback holds immense significance for me, and I’ll always cherish this moment and this weekend. It felt like experiencing a beautiful moment once again after a long time.

“To compete against the top riders in WorldSBK in my debut weekend and first race was remarkable. What more can I say?

“I found myself leading the race, in front, and that feeling was incredible. I am genuinely ecstatic and filled with joy. It’s a beautiful feeling, one that I will always remember from this inaugural weekend.”
